How to Use the Chinese Gender Calendar

A step-by-step guide to calculating your lunar age, finding your lunar conception month, and reading the chart to get your baby gender prediction.

⚡ Quick Summary

  • The calendar predicts baby gender using mother's lunar age and the lunar month of conception.
  • Lunar age = Western age + 1 (sometimes +2 near Chinese New Year).
  • Lunar conception month ≠ Gregorian month — always convert using a lunar calendar.
  • Find your row (age) and column (month) on the chart — the cell shows Boy or Girl.
  • Accuracy is ~50% — this is traditional folklore, not science.

Calculate Your Lunar Age

The Chinese Gender Calendar uses lunar age, not Western age. Lunar age starts at 1 at birth and increases at every Chinese New Year — not on your birthday.

  • Basic formula: Lunar Age = Western Age + 1
  • More precisely: Count the Chinese New Years from your birth year to conception year (inclusive).
  • Example: Born 1995, conception 2026 → 2026 − 1995 + 1 = Lunar Age 32.
  • Note: If your birthday is after Chinese New Year in that year, add 1 more. Our calculator handles this automatically.

Find the Lunar Month of Conception

The lunar calendar doesn't align with the Gregorian calendar. Each lunar month starts at the new moon. Your Gregorian conception month is not the same as your lunar conception month.

  • Chinese New Year shifts every year — in 2026 it is Feb 17, in 2027 Feb 6, in 2028 Jan 26.
  • Before Chinese New Year: January or early February conceptions fall in the previous lunar year.

Read the Chinese Gender Chart

The chart is a simple grid. With your lunar age and lunar month ready, finding your prediction takes just seconds.

  • Rows = Lunar Age — find the row matching your lunar age (18 to 45).
  • Columns = Lunar Month — find the column for lunar month 1 through 12.
  • Intersection = Prediction — the cell shows Boy or Girl.

Using LMP or IVF Dates

Not everyone knows their exact conception date. Our calculator supports three input methods:

  • Exact Conception Date: Most precise. Use if you know the exact date.
  • LMP (Last Menstrual Period): Enter first day of your last period. We add 14 days to estimate conception.
  • IVF / Embryo Transfer: Enter transfer date. We subtract 3 days (Day-3 embryo) to estimate fertilization date.
💡 Tip: The LMP method is most commonly used in clinics. If your doctor gave you a due date, count back 40 weeks to find your LMP.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using Western age instead of lunar age — always add +1 to your Western age.
  • Using Gregorian month as the lunar month — always convert your conception date to a lunar month first.
  • Forgetting the Chinese New Year cutoff — January or early February conceptions may fall in the previous lunar year.
  • Leap month confusion — some years have a leap lunar month. These still count as the regular month number on the chart.

⚠️ Important Disclaimer

  • The Chinese Gender Calendar is a traditional folklore method with no scientific basis.
  • Research shows its predictions are no more accurate than a 50/50 coin flip.
  • A baby's sex is determined by chromosomes and can only be confirmed through medical testing (ultrasound or NIPT).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the chart to plan the gender of my baby?

  • Many couples use the chart before conception to look for months that show their preferred prediction.
  • Find your lunar age for the target year, then scan the row to find "Boy" or "Girl" months.
  • Remember: The chart has ~50% accuracy and cannot reliably predict biological sex.

What if my lunar age falls outside 18–45?

  • Traditional charts cover ages 18 to 45. Most pregnancies fall within this range.
  • If you are younger than 18 or older than 45 in lunar years, the chart has no defined prediction.
  • Our calculator will still show a result — note it is an extrapolation beyond the traditional chart.

Why does my result differ from another website?

  • Different websites may use different versions of the chart grid.
  • Lunar age calculation methods may differ (some don't add +1 correctly).
  • Lunar month conversion logic may vary, especially near Chinese New Year.

Is the prediction the same for twins?

  • Twins conceived on the same date get the same chart prediction.
  • The chart cannot predict twin pregnancies or account for chromosomal differences.
